Free Lions (Italy)

The Tuscania-based birrificio now produces around twenty brews and distributes to locations across Italy and Europe. While Free Lions is not yet a household name on the international beer scene, drinkers in the know appreciate Fralleoni’s freewheeling approach, which melds humour, originality and no shortage of expertise in revitalising familiar European and American beer styles.

Free Lions brewery owner Andrea Fralleoni has spent years dedicating himself to the art of brewing – and it shows in his beers.
His passion caught alight when he began brewing beers at home on his evenings and weekends. Later, he met brewer Steve Dawson and took on a placement at his White Dog brewery close to Modena, while still managing to hold down a day-job as a Project Manager.
In 2011 he undertook the project he really wanted - opening up Free Lions in the Etruscan town of Tuscania, approximately 100km from Rome. The birrificio grew faster than he could have imagined: soon Fralleoni – assisted by Adriano Protopapa and Michele Penta – was producing close to twenty beers and distributing to locations across Italy and Europe. In 2014 the team were joined by Massimo Serra, one of the co-founders of the Turan brewery.
The name Free Lions – a playful homage to his surname - is instructive of Fralleoni’s overall approach. Familiar European and American beer styles are adapted to the brewer’s own taste, with quirks and humour coming through in the packaging. Think a session IPA with a bold fruity flavour (Kamikaze #2), or a German weizen infiltrated by American and New Zealand hops (Miami Wais).
