Oakham Ales was established in October 1993 in Oakham (Rutland) - the first beer brewed was Jeffrey Hudson Bitter (JHB). Further beers were added in 1994/5 and the first awards won by the increasingly popular ales. The brewery was extended in 1996 and Bishops Farewell became a permanent ale in the same year. In 1998 the brewery relocated to new premises in Peterborough, a 35 barrel plant being installed in the new Brewery Tap brew pub and in 2001 JHB won “Supreme Champion Beer of Great Britain” – the most prestigious prize in UK brewing. Rapidly increasing demand meant that capacity at the Brewery Tap site was reached and in October 2006 a new 75 barrel brewery was opened in the Woodston area of Peterborough. Volume has doubled in the last three years with particularly rapid growth in bottled beer production and Oakham Ales today brews 247000 brewers barrels (40800 HL) of beer per year. That’s 7.1m pints!
