Stancill Brewery

South Yorkshire

Established in 2014, Stancill Brewery is an independent micro-brewery based in Sheffield, producing award-winning real ales, premium Stancill Pilsner, the original Sheffield Lager and expertly developed craft beers. Using the rescued brew kit and yeast strain of the former Oakwell Brewery of Barnsley, we proudly continue 120-years of brewing heritage from our family-run brewery in Sheffield, including the legendary Barnsley Bitter.

In 2013, Oakwell Brewery of Barnsley, announced their closure. Oakwell’s legendary Barnsley Bitter faced extinction, along with 120 years of brewing heritage. Motivated by a desire to ensure that the production of Oakwell’s famous Barnsley Bitter could continue, Barnsley boys Tom & Adam rescued the brewing equipment from Oakwell and set about recreating the much loved beer.

A site in Sheffield was selected as the home of the new brewery. Known as the ‘Brewing Capital of England’, the city’s proximity to the Peak District gives access to the purest water - perfect for brewing. The 22.5 barrel kit was carefully transported to the new location and painstakingly reassembled under the direction of Chief Engineer, Tim. Stancill Brewery was ready to brew.

Production commenced in January 2014 with a revival of the historic Barnsley Bitter, true to the original recipe. Led by Head Brewer Dean, our brewery team work hard to ensure that the legacy continues to this day. Barnsley Bitter quickly became a firm favourite, winning Champion Bitter of Yorkshire 2014 (Gold) and Champion Bitter of Sheffield 2022 (Silver), and now takes pride of place in our core range of award-winning real ales.

Armed with our brewing knowledge and state of the art filtration equipment we created our premium quad-filtered Sheffield Pilsner, using expertly selected ingredients and traditional Bavarian techniques. In 2016, we developed a brand new recipe to satisfy the thirst for a quality, independently produced 4% lager. Stancill Lager made history as the first lager to be wholly developed and brewed within Sheffield.

All our beers are brewed in Sheffield by traditional methods using malt crushed in-house and fresh yeast. In support of British hop growers, we are proud to use exclusively British hops in our core range. We use our program of special brews to showcase British hop varieties, and we also engage with our suppliers by participating in hop trials to assist with the development of new varieties to encourage domestic cultivation of this crop which is integral to our products.

We love how beer brings people together (co-founder Tom even met his wife at one of our famous brewery parties!) We also love bringing our beers to you, and we are proud to supply our beers across the UK. Whether brewing traditional ales or developing new products, our heritage is always at the heart of what we do, fueled by a solid Yorkshire passion.
