Description
To celebrate moving into our new premises in Caerphilly, we decided our first brew on site would be something a bit out of the ordinary. Since we're also sharing that premises with a couple of friends, we thought they ought to be on board too, so Velvet Owl, RT Ales and newcomer Space Cadet Brewing put their heads together and came up with a fantastic summer sipper. My Friend, The Lizard is a hybrid beer of sorts, combining our favourite aspects of East Coast US pale ales and Belgian farmhouse beers. Loads of chewy oats and torrified wheat give a full, thick body, rounded out by a touch of acidulated malt and backed up with the spicy character of rye and Belgian aromatic malt. A very small pre-boil addition of Magnum hops gives a smattering of bitterness, followed by a huge dose of Ella, Mosaic and Simcoe hops in the whirlpool to bring masses of tropical fruit and pine notes with a hint of herbal character. We fermented the beer warm with a blend of our favourite Vermont yeast and a saison yeast, and dry-hopped with 10g per litre of Ekuanot, Citra, Mosaic, Simcoe and Amarillo for even more huge fruity aromatics.
